I have been always interested in a piano trio, as a jazz formation, having a long tradition and colourful history. Literally hundreds of recordings have been made, to begin with Art Tatum to Bill Evans and Cecil Taylor.
I have always been intrigued by the piano’s restrictions in the creation of personal and original style and sound, far removed from the versatility of the clarinet or saxophone. Only the extremely talented pianist is able to create an individual sound.
The creation of this project has been based on participation of Kenny Werner, who has achieved this, an individual style that is essential to its success. His playing has fascinated me since I experienced the spatial qualities and uniqueness of his sound. His improvisations don't contain a single unnecessary note. Kenny is a man blessed with an unbreakable inner calm.
Our collaborations both in the recording studio and at live performances were intense but full of harmony and creative atmosphere.
Album Shadows is the next step in the evolution of my research into improvisation. This music is unconstrained and devoid of routine, demanding that the author be himself.
They say ‘even if you travel far and wide, you won’t escape your shadow’ but the music that is in your mind must see the light of day sooner or later …
